View Full Version : Garmin 295 input to ADI Pilot I
My ADI Pilot I is not picking up the route from my Garmin 295. The ADI will track on a course I set into it but I cannot get the NAV function to work. The Garmin 295 is hard wired to the aircraft power and I have the serial out hooked into the ADI Pilot I and set to NMEA out, baud 4800 and they are wired to the same grounding point. Anything else I can try?

Hi Chad,
Just some questions to make sure we're both on the same page. The ADI will display the current ground track in the LED display, correct? Do you get the "OFF" in the display when the ADI powers up?
It sounds as though you have it all set up correctly, otherwise the ADI would not receive the track info. I'll assume you have the power/data cable for the 295 and that is how you have it all pinned out. If you have access to another 295/296, I would try swapping it. It's as if the 295 isn't sending the flight plan data through the NMEA feed. Perhaps some corrupted data in the PGRMB sentence.
Let me know what you find. Thanks!
Thanks for the reply. I sure do get the off display when I turn the ADI on and it does display the ground track (from the ADI satellite antenna). I recently purchased the power/data cable for the 295 and just have not been able to get the ADI to receive or the 295 to send. Just not sure which it is. I will have to ask around at the airport and see if anyone has a 295 I can borrow to see if that is the problem. I want to be sure that I have everything set up correctly. My concern is the ground. Do the two grounds (295 and ADI) have to be wired together or is it ok to have both attached to the same grounding point with the same screw? Also, is there a way to tell on the ADI if it is getting the signal while still on the ground? As I read the ADI manual, to activate the "Nav" function I must be in "Track" mode first and then momentarily press and release the knob and the "Nav" light should light up. Is this correct?
One other question. If I disconnect the ADI sat antenna on the ground, will the ADI display the off flag if it is receiving the signal from the 295? If so, this may be a way to troubleshoot the connection.

Hi Chad,
Ok, new information! You have the internal GPS on your ADI Pilot I. When we put the internal GPS in the unit, it completely disables the external input. So you actually can't get the signal from the 295 into it. That's why it won't go into the Nav mode. With the GPS inside, you just have the track selector.
Ok, that solves that. I didn't see anything about that in the manual. Thanks for the help, I would have hated to spend more time troubleshooting this.

No problem. If you decide you want to change this, let me know by PM. We can probably work something out to remove the internal GPS so you can get the full function back. Thanks!
