Lucas I have been following the VAF thread re autopilot problems with AFS. Actually the one Jason is on my field. I have sorcerer, 530w, sl30 and AFS 3500. I also have 'switch' to go between the 530w and AFS as source for autopilot. Works fine in 530w mode.
1. Am I correct that if the 530W crumps and I switch the AFS input to the sl30 will the sorcerer fly the 'EFIS', ie the sl30?? Therefore I could shoot an ILS on the AFS, which would direct the sorcerer to fly the approach.
2. Likewise, if the source for the AFS is it's own gps signal, then the sorcerer would fly that 'direct' to signal.
3. and if EFIS crumped I could fly the 530w as usual, and if both crumped then I could 'fly' the sorcerer in trak mode, using the standard compass for a heading, and alt hold for altitude.
4. On my AFS there are dialogs for 'autopilot' but I assume I ignore them since I don't use the AFS autopilot.
I just want to clarify. Thanks.

Larry

Hi Larry,

Let's see if I can help out here.

1. As far as I know of the AFS EFIS capability, yes, you can do that.

2. Yes. If you set up a flight plan on the EFIS, the AP can follow it.

3. If both units quit, you will have the Sorcerer bank angle backup mode, not a track mode. You have to have a GPS source to get the track mode. But you will get altitude hold, altitude select, VNAV, etc.

4. Correct. Those will be for the AFS Pilot control.....I think. :)

thanks for the speedy reply. in bank angle backup mode, can i tell the autopilot to 'turn' right or left by turning the knob??? and if it turns, does it do 'standard rate turn' until i tell it to stop turning??? larry

Hi Larry,

Yes, you can bank the plane left and right using the knob. It can bank from 0-5° in 1° increments. After 5° it will go in 5° increments to 30° in either direction.

It is not a rate based system, but it will continue to bank in the at the selected setting until you tell it to stop. Thanks!
