I just turned on my ADI 2G for the first time and am not sure if it is working properly or not. It lights up but I don't get a readout on the digital DG nor does the horizon make any changes when I manually pitch the fuse up. I installed the battery backup and it appears to work, I also have the GPS antenna connected and in a field of view that should result in the unit seeing the sky. Any suggestions?

Hi Thomas,

First, the GPS receiver inside the ADI needs about 30-45 minutes to acquire satellites the first time. It also needs 10 knots of ground speed before it will actually indicate the current track.

Second, if you're just tilting the fuselage and then running back to the cockpit to see the instrument, you are seeing it work correctly. The ADI gives a velocity vector for pitch indication, not actual pitch attitude. Velocity vector is a picture of what the aircraft is actually doing, not just where the nose is pointed. The long term indication of the pitch on an ADI is vertical speed, with the short term being direct gyroscopic output.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Lucas;
I appreciate you letting me know what to expect. It's easy to get all caught up in the initial fire-up of your panel for the first time. Knowing what to expect helps with understanding and reactions to the equipment.
