I have an RV7 with the Digiflight II VSGV, AFS 3500 and Garmin 530 (I use ARINC and GPSS).
I am absolutely delighted with the A/P and it seems to work faultlessly. I have been experimenting with the maximum capture angle. Yesterday I flew at almost exactly 90 degrees away from the programmed required track on the GPS. After a moments indecision the A/P started to turn onto track but banked steeply , the nose fell and if I had not disconnected the A/P we would have fallen into what I think would have been a steep spiral dive.
I am new to A/Ps so I don't know if there is a maximum capture angle that an A/P could be expected to meet, beyond which they simply cannot capture a track, or is there a set-up setting which I need to experiment with to avoid this large bank angle. I was flying at approx 148kts.
Many thanks
